The LAP-BAND® procedure. Lose weight and keep it off.

The National Institutes of Health report that 90 percent of the people who participate in diets and weight-reduction programs do not experience significant and sustained weight loss. If non-surgical methods have not helped you lose weight long-term, you still have another option. The LAP-BAND® System is an adjustable gastric band designed to help you lose excess body weight, improve weight-related health conditions and enhance quality of life. The LAP-BAND® System procedure places a silicone ring around the upper part of the stomach which is filled with saline on its inner surface. This creates a new, smaller stomach pouch that can hold only a small amount of food, so the food storage area in the stomach is reduced. You feel full faster, and as a result, you eat less and lose weight and keep it off long-term. The LAP-BAND® System is the only adjustable and reversible weight-loss surgery available in the United States and the only weight-loss surgery approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Since there is no stomach cutting, stapling, or gastrointestinal re-routing involved in the LAP-BAND® System procedure, it is considered the safest, least invasive, and least traumatic of all weight-loss surgeries.

Not everyone who has a weight problem should consider surgery. It depends on whether or not you are overweight, obese, or morbidly obese. An ideal BMI is 19 to 25. If your BMI is between 25 and 30, you are thought to be overweight. If it is higher than 30, you are obese. That means you are at risk for health problems. If your BMI is 40 or more, you are said to have “morbid” obesity. A BMI higher than 35 suggests surgery might be a proper approach.
